A Milton Arceneaux documentary film

The Film

Before daylight, the water is already heating. A 91-year-old pot sits over the fire.

The film

A case knife handed down from a granddaddy waits on the table, and a Winchester that has been in the family since 1885 leans close by.

The Old Way Still Cuts follows four Creole families in Southwest Louisiana, the Boagni, Jones, DeClouet and Cravins families, through the work of the boucherie. From the neck to the tail, nothing is wasted, and the hog feeds everyone who came to help.

At a time when the boucherie is increasingly visible but rarely understood, the film treats the tradition as lived responsibility rather than spectacle, grounded in family labor and knowledge passed hand to hand.
